On the 30th of October, it was a new beginning for all of us SNCOs. We boarded a chartered bus from Yusof Ishak Secondary School to Changi Coast Adventure Centre, Camelot. On the way to the campsite, all of us were filled with excitement, as this was not only our first time but also the first time the most number of schools will be attending.
Day 1-The moment we reached there we were introduced to all the teacher-officers, commanding officers of various schools and sorted into our groups. There were a total of 8 groups and each group consisted of about 17 cadets, one SNCO and 1 teacher officer of another school. Our first activity of the day was rock climbing, flying fox, abseiling and high rope elements. An instructor from Camelot introduced us to different harnesses. There are two types of harnesses, automatic and manual. We were also briefed on the safety rules of rock climbing and the checking procedure of the belay before climbing.
When my turn came to climb, it wasn’t as easy as it seemed as the rock pieces were rather small and my fingers kept slipping off them, it seemed like a never-ending journey, and it was also tiring. Then we moved on to the next station, flying fox. Like before, we were briefed on the safety rules of the activity and also the procedures after each cadet’s turn. The height where we were sailing down from was three floors high and the sail down was tremendously breath taking. Then we had to hold on to a pole to be pulled to a certain location near the trolley to remove the harness. The next station was abseiling. Abseiling was fun, hanging from a rope, we had to stay in a position and lower ourselves down the wall with help from the instructor.
The last station was high rope element. The high rope element was called multi-line element. We had to climb up a pole to reach the top before starting on the obstacle. Along the way, there were thick hanging ropes to hold onto while moving across to the other end.
After all the activities were finished, we started to prepare on our campfire night items. It started with the lighting of the campfire by Major Howard and singing by the CLTs. Followed by the teacher officers taking their seats. Then came the various performances by the 8 groups, campfire songs and lastly, the friendship dance. That night was unforgettable.
Day 2- It was the most exciting day. We were doing rafting and kayaking. The morning started out with PT and 3 rounds around the canteen. After that we were introduced to the canoe and the oars and the safety regulations. Before setting out, we were paired up by the CLT. Those who knows how to kayak were paired up with those who doesn’t know how to kayak. We also did a human chain in the water before pushing our canoes into the water. Out at sea, we tried rafting up together and also changing of seats while rafting.
After 1 hour out at sea, we headed back to shore.
Back at the campsite, we started on making a raft. We had to make a raft with 6 poles, 4 barrels and ropes. Unfortunately, due to time constrains, we couldn’t finish it and the structure was to loose and weak against the incoming waves as what our instructor evaluated. After all that exciting activity we were briefed on area cleaning. The bunk area was swept, litters everywhere picked up and toilets washed. The day ended with prize presentations to the best camper, best group and also the best camper in each group.
